site-specific architectural intervention, acoustic extension, audio playlist
2011
Speaking Trumpets is a site-specific architectural intervention/set of acoustic extensions made from everyday domestic objects, that penetrate the façade of Casco’s Grand Domestic Revolution apartment located at Bemuurde Weerd in Utrecht, NL. We designed, built, and used the structures while in residency at the GDR apartment during the month of April 2011.
Speaking Trumpets was inaugurated on the occasion of the Dutch holiday Queen’s Day with a broadcast on the politics of 'listening in'. Using lo-fi and lo-tech amplification, music, anecdotes, recipes, and situations, sounds of the interior space of GDR apartment were exteriorized. This sound 'outervention' reversed the usual process of keeping domestic sounds in and exterior sounds out.
